Eight more patients were then given similar transfusions, and seven of them also recovered. These were the last cases in the epidemic. The foreign doctors did not, however, concede that the treatment had worked. “We’ll never know,” said a physician from the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta. Other possible explanations for the recoveries were offered – late in the epidemic the virus may have become less deadly, or people may have been getting smaller viral loads when infected.
