Wright Mills’s White Collar, a study of the United States, and David Lockwood’s The Blackcoated Worker, examined the relationships between political behaviour and the socialstructural location of white collar workers. If less evocative than Masterman, these works pursued some shared concerns. 100 This emphasis laid bare the residual question of how a diverse lower middle class stratum, one that so eluded ready generalisations, might have been responsible en masse for the electoral defeat of Progressivism.
