October At Orleans he continues his work on Descriptive Sketches (cf. the reference to the Loiret tributary and October clouds, 624--6; the note of rejoicing in the birth of Liberty which follows expresses W' s feelings after hearing of the French victory against the Prussians at Valmy on 20 September). Late in the month he leaves for Paris, where, in the course of his city walks he sees the Temple where Louis XVI is imprisoned, the palace which has been stormed, and the Place du Carrousel, a recent scene of carnage.
He fears being published, and is 'easy' now about the theatre; if he undertakes another play, it will be 'purposely' written, either for reading or for the stage. He has written 1300 lines of his projected poem (The Recluse, including 'The Ruined Cottage'); 30 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 16 18 20 21 23 24 25 26 27 29 A Wordsworth Chronology it will contain 'pictures of Nature, Man, and Society', and will accommodate anything he knows (L1, 212).
