Fundamental Concepts To get a general understanding of this tradition it will be helpful to consider some of its most fundamental concepts. Three of the most important are (1) the idea that what we experience is only mind or mental representation (cittamātra/vijñaptimātra), (2) the ālayavijñāna or all-base consciousness, and (3) the three-nature model of reality (trisvabhāva). It is important, however, not to reduce Yogācāra to merely these concepts, which, if isolated from the basic Buddhist framework, might lead to a misrepresentation of the tradition.
These three represent distinct aspects of the same realities, different in appearance but inseparable in nature. It is a fundamental principle of Buddhism that all phenomena arise due to causes and conditions. There is no intrinsic nature to things, only dependent arising. In Yogācāra, the cause for experience of any kind is not to be found somewhere outside—it is the latencies produced by past actions left on the all-base consciousness. Objects perceived as external to consciousness induce the experience of pleasant, unpleasant, or neutral sensations.
All of these are considered to be great signs of spiritual accomplishment, indicating that Rongtön had reached the sixth level (bhūmi) of realization. One can confidently say that Rongtön Sheja Künrig was one of the most outstanding Tibetan scholars of his time. 48 Rongtön’s Commentary on the Madhyāntavibhāga Regarded as an emanation of Maitreya, Rongtön is one of the few teachers in Tibet to have commented on each of the five treatises of Maitreya. In the tradition, his writings in general are considered to be highly authoritative, and those on the works of Maitreya particularly so.
