Table 14 presents some examples of the influence of loading method on the nominal strength values of selected faultless wood species in the air-dry moisture condition. 2. Orientation of external loading As Table 14 shows, the nominal strength values are different in axial and transverse directions under tension as well as under compression. This together with Fig. , the direction of the external force in relation to the cell structure, has an influence on the strength properties of wood. This holds not only for the fracture strength, but also for other strength properties.

Effect of the deviation of the loading direction from the axial direction When the external loading direction deviates from the axial direction, the deviation angle has an influence on the mechanism, by which the unidirectionally fiber reinforced composite deforms and finally cracks when reaching its fracture strength. As illustrated in Fig. 33, the final fracture, which is based on the fracture of fibers and proceeds therefore more or less perpendicularly to the fibers, takes place only at loading orientations very close to the axial direction ( 4o).

In the axial direction. The obtained strength is a function of the volume content of fibers in the way schematically shown in Fig. 31. The influence of fibers increases proportional to the their volume fraction, and the influence of matrix decreases correspondingly proportional to its volume fraction. The influence of fibers starts from zero, but that of matrix from a certain higher value. Then at small volume fractions, the influence of matrix is bigger than that of the fibers, and the total strength of the composite decreases with increasing fiber volume fraction until a point of equal influence is reached.
