In his Nat Turner’s Slave Rebellion (New York: Humanities Press, 1966), for example, Herbert Aptheker writes, “The aim of an insurrection is not revolutionary; the aim of a rebellion is. A revolt is of less magnitude than a rebellion” (p. 2). His distinctions, therefore, are based on degree. But because eighteenth- and nineteenth-century authors used the terms interchangeably when reporting, I will do the same.
As a consequence of this ambivalence about public perception, it was not unusual for newspapers to take little notice of quashed slave actions and little if any transcribed minutes of the trials that might have followed. The documents that we do have, therefore, are nearly all from the perspective of threatened whites. The single extended narrative that comes from a slave defendant is what came to be called Nat Turner’s Confessions, and even that was edited by a white lawyer in ways that clearly reﬂected his dislike of Turner and his dismay at Turner’s bloodletting.
The ofﬁce that housed the colony’s ofﬁcial documents was completely destroyed, and state papers were saved only because they were dumped by the armful out the windows into the snow. The glow from the ﬁre could be seen from all over the city, and ﬁre brigades rushed to the fort, hoping to quench the blaze before it spread to the rest of the wooden structures in the city. Fortunately, a falling wintry mix eventually kept the ﬁre in check, and by morning tragedy had been averted.
